10 minutes of reading that saves a move day headache. The base rule, the gate rule and everything Scott checks before the dolly rolls.
Rule number 1
Flat & level. Everything else is detail.
Your spa needs a patio, slab, gravel base, hard packed ground or deck that is flat, level and at least the size of the spa. Within 2 to 3 inches of level on any solid surface and you are fine. Uneven or soft ground can sink and damage the spa.
Pea gravel
Simple to level with a straight 2x4 and a carpenter's level. Crushed rock works too. The tradeoffs are a messier look and weed control.
Decking
Pressure treated decking on a 4x4 timber frame, supported at regular intervals. Fill between the timbers with sand so the spa sits on a truly flat surface.
Patio stones or pavers
Pre cast slabs or pavers, usually 8 or 9 evenly spaced depending on spa size. Seat them well, level them and fill between with sand.
Poured concrete slab
The permanent choice. About 4 inches thick, and pouring it a little wider than the spa buys you a clean walkway and storage edge.
Thinking about placing directly on hard packed dirt? Sometimes it works with a foam cushion under the shell. Call Scott first and take your electrical source into account when picking the spot.
Move day math
Walk the route before we roll it
The spa generally arrives on a trailer and gets positioned sideways on a rolling dolly. On the dolly the spa rides about 2 feet taller, so look up as well as sideways.
- Gates and paths need about 36 inches of clear width
- Measure any 90 degree turn along the route, not just the straightaways
- Watch for utility meters, low eaves, gutters and overhanging trees
- Soft lawn or deep gravel? Boards go down first. The dolly will not cross a very soft or wet lawn
- Leave working room on all 4 sides, especially by the control pad
- Small slopes and low walls are fine with extra hands. Big ones may need the crane
The crane case
In rare cases there is no safe path and a crane is the only way in. Scott owns the crane service, so even that stays 1 phone call. The crane cost is quoted up front and paid by the homeowner.
A standard move runs with a 2 man crew. If the spa has to come off the dolly for a slope or wall, extra labor gets arranged before move day, never improvised during it.
